The idea to open GB and Chitral for tourism is deliberately putting the locals lives in danger.

     Meher Jabeen

I recently came back from Hunza and I saw how committees and civil society people are trying their best to control spread of COVID-19 through precautionary measures like social distancing. It is because we don’t have any healthcare facilities there. During my 22 days stay in Passu, I lived in quarantine for 14 days. Doctors and committee members visited us for our screening and finally gave us a go ahead to meet our family members. God Forbid, if Corona spreads in the region then people won’t be taken to hospitals but will be put in quarantine with limited healthcare facilities. What about people like my father, who are diabetic and high BP patients and also with other illnesses? Moreover, majority of the people even can’t afford cost of hospitalization.

Flow of tourism will bring nothing but destruction in the region. No one in the region is dying because of hunger or poverty. We have our own limited resources and we understand that during this pandemic we can use these limited resources to spend our daily lives.

The PM talked about tourism benefiting GB, and who are the main beneficiaries of these so called tourists? It is the owner of hotels, people having vehicles and the ones having boats at Attabad Lake. This is not even 30% of the total population of GB. So, for God sake, someone tell the PM to stop being so insensitive and don’t put the people’s lives in danger who don’t have anything to protect themselves.
